National ENERGY GLOBE Award United Kingdom 2018
Switchee began with the fundamental aims of eliminating fuel poverty, cutting the carbon emissions of social housing stock and providing key environmental data to social landlords. By monitoring and learning occupancy habits and trends, Switchee optimizes heating settings, reducing energy bills and the carbon footprint of low income homes by 15-20%. The data provided by Switchee’s five sensors is used by landlords to improve the energy efficiency of their housing stock. Flagship.
Switchee was conceived to tackle two major social and environmental issues faced by the UK housing sector. In the UK alone, 2.38 million households are in fuel poverty, representing 10.6% of all UK households. The energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock is poor, since 88% of the 22 million homes were built pre-1990, whilst in London 37% of carbon emissions are domestic, compared to 25% worldwide.
Switchee directly fights fuel poverty by learning household occupancy patterns and turning the heating off when nobody is home, saving residents up to 20%. Optimising household heating systems helps avoid unnecessarily high energy bills. Switchee also offers proactive energy saving advice to tenants and can compare tenant energy consumption with that of their neighbours, prompting positive behavioural changes in relation to energy use.
Switchee is a highly innovative product that offers a range of features currently unavailable on conventional consumer smart thermostats. It has GSM connectivity; that is, it can be installed anywhere and remain connected without Wi Fi. Switchee works passively, saving energy and reporting back, even in households where residents choose not to engage. In addition, the technology has the ability to interface with external sensors; therefore, it can speak to most sensors that operate on the z-wave network.
