With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. Episome Biotechnologies developed a special technology, EpiCellulyse XT, which converts the paper sludge into an intermediate product. It can be efficiently utilized as a carbon source for bioconversion for biogas production. In other words, paper sludge can be used as a substitute for energy crops, straw or corn stubbles.
Each year, approximately 400 million tonnes of paper and paperboard is produced globally. This amount of production corresponds to an estimated 30-90 billion tonnes of polluted wastewater which after treatment creates 40 million tonnes of sludge as solid-waste. Before Epicellulyse XT technology was developed, paper sludge disposing and recycling methods were considered as temporary solution because to their unsustainable, costly and environmentally unfriendly approaches.
EpiCellulyse XT is the solution to the ever increasing paper sludge. The technology converts paper sludge into an intermediate product that can be efficiently utilized as a carbon source for bioconversion for biogas production as a substitute for energy crops, straw or corn stubbles. Paper sludge treated with EpiCellulyse XT technology is a sustainable, low cost and carbon rich feedstock for biogas production.
The innovation of the project simultaneously addresses two main challenges; that is, disposing the paper sludge in a more environmentally friendly way and generating a new source of feedstock to overcome the carbon supply problem in biogas production. EpiCellulyse technology uses the first cost-effective enzyme among generic cellulose breakers that is tailor-made for paper industry.
