Energy Globe Award

With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

Fully integrated solar system on performance sailing catamaran

An ultralight walkable solar system was fully integrated into the deck of a catamaran. By using the most efficient solar cells available and adapting them to the special conditions at sea, an output of 1550 Wp could be achieved. The electrical system can therefore be operated self-sufficiently. Besides saving fossil fuels, the use of the diesel generator can be minimized leading to less noise and pollution of air as well as water.

Initial situation
Yachts usually operate a diesel generator for 2-3 hours a day which means that 5-8 l diesel are consumed and noise is emitted. An environmental friendly alternative was sought without compromising in regard of comfort. The development of one solar system for the operation of air-condition, a desalination plant, a diving compressor, 4 fridges, an entertainment system, a washing machine, a dishwasher and a stove, is quite a difficult task. Constantly changing light conditions and partial shadowing due to the sail were other obstacles. The system also had to be as light as possible since the hull cannot bear heavy loads.

Solution
The specially designed solar system resulting from this project features the most efficient solar cells currently available and can adapt to the difficult light conditions by means of MPPT trackers. Its total weight is less than 25 kg and it is walkable due to a special laminate surface. Next to fuel savings and less emissions, this system offers perfect comfort for the yacht owner: the electrical system can be operated completely with renewable energies. Long journeys are possible without dependence on electricity and fuel. This unique solar system has been operated for more than a year and provides the yacht with 6 kWh a day.

Innovation
By using a special laminate it was possible to reduce the weight of the solar panels by 80% and to bend the cells easily in order to adjust them to curved surfaces. The system is fully walkable thanks to a special installation mode. The installation without visible cables in combination with several MPPT trackers led to a much higher yield compared to conventional solar systems on sailing yachts.
