Energy Globe Award

With more than 187 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. Insect Respect

Insect Respect is a quality label introduced by the biocide company Reckhaus. It promotes more ecological products that reduce insect loss, prevention of insect control and projects contributing to public awareness and creates areas that offer ideal conditions for insects.

Initial situation
The balance of many ecosystems relies on insects, as they are an important part of the food chain, natural helpers in pollination and in the degradation of organic substances. However, the diversity and number of insects is falling sharply – as much as 40% of insect species are either extinct, endangered or extremely rare. Aware of this situation, Hans-Dietrich Reckhaus, the CEO of a biocide company, dared to question his company’s business model and develop a compensation model for every insect that company’s products eliminated indoors.

Solution
Reckhaus has explored the negative consequences of their biocide products and changed its mindset to an ecological one. Company now strives to reduce the use of insect control, to compensate insect losses and promote social awareness of the high value insects provide for us through education and sensitization. It has introduced a quality label that stands for insect protection indoors. It has also developed a unique compensation model, which encourages creating insect-friendly compensation areas where insect control seems inevitable. The firm has also produced more than 100 fact sheets, an animation movie awarded by the Cannes Film Festival, published a book and numerous publications on the value of insects.

Innovation
The developed solution is the first one that allow fighting insects in an ecological way, without harming their existence. The methodology is scientifically proven and allows compensating for cases where insect control indoors is inevitable. Furthermore, the company has dared to disrupt their own business model and refocus their efforts on the educational aspects.
