With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

The first energy self-sufficient apartment building powered by solar energy was built in Switzerland. Home for 9 families, the house manages without any external power connection and is not even connected to the public grid. The inhabitants can only use the energy that the house produces and stores. Excessive energy from the summer is stored for the winter which makes living without any comfort losses possible. Mobility is part of the project as 2 vehicles are available for the inhabitants.
The energy strategy 2050 aims at the expansion of renewable energies, promotion of energy efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions. A huge challenge is the storage of electricity since the production of solar energy is quite volatile. When the public grid is not used at all, even when the sun is not shining or the wind not blowing, this results in a relief of the grid. When no energy is available from outside, the whole surplus from the summer has to be stored until winter comes.
This house has to store the surplus from the day and the summer so that there is enough energy available in the night and the winter. Unlike a zero-energy house or a plus-energy house that produces the same amount of energy that it takes, the energy self-sufficient house doesn't consume energy from the grid at all. Thus, the public grid is relieved when it is needed the most.
It is absolutely unique that the building is not connected to the local grid and that no external energy sources like gas, wood or heating oil are used. The sun is the only external power source and the inhabitants can only use the amount of energy that the house produces and stores. Excessive energy from the PV system is transformed into hydrogen and can be stored like this. The first winter which was very cold and misty, could be managed without any problem. Light and electricity were always available and the inhabitants were never cold.
