National ENERGY GLOBE Award Sri Lanka 2017

Submitted by: Puritas (Private) Limited
Puritas Sath Diyawara

Puritas Sath Diyawara provides clean drinking water to people affected by chronic kidney disease. Reverse osmosis water purification systems are established in each village with multiple docking stations in and around the village.

Initial situation
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a fatal condition primarily spreading among the farming community in Sri Lanka since the early 1980s. It has grown to a stage that almost as many as 13 farmers, mainly in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, are dying every day of kidney failure due to CKD but many go undiagnosed. To date, no specific cause has been identified, but a multitude of potential toxic pollutants have been suggested, including heavy metals, cadmium, arsenic and lead; fluoride and hard water; and ionic-concentration of water, chemical fertilizers as well as toxic agro-chemicals. More than 400,000 people are currently said to be affected, leaving some families without adult men - the primary breadwinners of those families. In addition, it is estimated that approximately 2.8 million people are at the risk of contracting this deadly disease. As it has been proven that the quality of drinking water directly affects the stage of CKD, there is a dire need for clean drinking water.

Solution
Puritas Sath Diyawara provides clean drinking water to people affected by CKD. 10 m3 reverse osmosis water purification systems are established in each village with multiple docking stations in and around the village. A bowser is provided to ensure all villagers have equal access to the water. In order to increase people's awareness of the disease's impact and ways to prevent it, libraries and internet access points were established to disseminate knowledge. The project also encompasses the importance of creating a sustainable environment and thus promotes organic agriculture through model organic farms as well as waste management programs. More than 25,000 people have been provided with clean water in 4 districts. Over 210 direct and 130 indirect job opportunities have been created, ensuring nearly 1,900 dependents with a source of income to fulfill their basic needs.

Innovation
This is the first project of its kind which has identified and implemented key initiatives to eradicate CKD addressing multiple root causes, i.e. contaminated drinking water, unawareness, inappropriate agricultural, health and sanitation facilities. Unlike in other purification facilities, Puritas Sath Diyawara introduced the concept of equal access to purified drinking water. Water tanks are stationed centrally inside the village and are filled by a bowser on a regular basis. This increases the reach and availability of purified water for every family in the village.
