With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.
National ENERGY GLOBE Award Singapore 2018
The Housing & Development Board (HDB) started the project with two key objectives - first, to set up a modern and high productivity Staging Ground to accept excavated earth from the local construction industry for use in land reclamation, and second, to reuse the excavated earth generated from local construction industry in place of sand for land reclamation works.
Singapore has been fast developing due to the need for commercial and industrial buildings, public housing and major infrastructure. The development by the construction industry generates massive amounts of excavated earth from the excavation of excavated earth for basements, levelling of hills, and tunneling. The first Staging Ground, Changi Staging Ground (CSG), was built by HDB to resolve the issue. However, the staging ground was built with a small capacity which could not accommodate the amount of material generated consistently by the industry.
In order to enhance the land reclamation methods, the Smart Staging Ground concept was conceptualized to bring about greater efficiency in operations and monitoring of activities. The vision and design for HDB’s Smart Staging Grounds is to create a modern staging ground, equipped with innovative and smart features to improve the efficiency, productivity and sustainability of land reclamation works and the process of earth disposal for the entire local construction industry.
Housing & Development Board is the pioneer agency in Singapore to develop and operate Staging Grounds which resolved an environmental issue of illegal dumping while up-cycling unwanted excavated earth into useful resources for land reclamation, and to innovatively create new land using new and sustainable engineering methods. HDB has overcome the demand for sand as a land reclamation material by using excavated earth as a replacement.
