National ENERGY GLOBE Award Puerto Rico 2017

Sustainable forestry & rainforest enrichment

This project involves the testing the efficacy of line-planting enrichment in the wet tropical forest life zone as a means of achieving both economic return and protection of natural biological resources.

Initial situation
Most of the original forests of Puerto Rico were logged and then converted for agricultural use over the last few centuries. A decline in agricultural land use, along with social and economic changes have permitted these lands to revert to secondary forests. Heavy rainfall often caused severe erosion and landslides on former agricultural or grazing land.

One option for forest regeneration and economic enhancement of secondary forests is enrichment planting, where valuable tree species are planted in cleared lines or blocks, simulating forest openings when tall trees fall within current forest vegetation, offering critical soil erosion protection, and facilitating forest development.

Wood is a world resource and Puerto Rico needs to utilize its forests successfully. The Las Casas de la Selva project focuses on land, forest, and timber management. Urban trees also go to waste (literally to land-fill), when cut-down for public safety and infrastructure protection, and this project seeks to address this ongoing issue as well.
