With more than 178 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

Sarhad Rural Support Program is the largest non-government organization proactive in promoting and supporting renewable, clean and sustainable energy, especially in off-grid areas.
Pakistan's power demand is higher than its supply, resulting in up to 16 hours of power outage per day. In some areas there is no supply at all. The North West region of Pakistan is remote and mountainous, and many people live in isolated villages. Geography alone would make it challenging to provide electricity to these villages, since mountain roads are unreliable and some areas are cut off for months in the winter.
Sarhad Rural Support Program is the largest non-government organization proactive in promoting and supporting renewable, clean and sustainable energy, especially in off-grid areas. So far, 286 micro hydro projects have been initiated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These produce 22.4 MW of electricity, benefiting 765,000 people, particularly women and children. They have contributed to the reduction of 61,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. By 2018, upon completion of 422 units they will produce 33.7 MW and benefit over a million people. As a result, the local women have started to become productive and use the available renewable energy which has increased their incomes by 156%.
One of the key features of these micro hydro units is the introduction of technical improvements to maximize their efficiency. A successful payment system was introduced which ensures the continuity of the project. Although electricity theft is quite a common phenomenon, people are willing to pay for reliable electricity.
