The red frog beach island resort runs a 193 kW centralised solar power system in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Over 332,000 kWh of sustainable and clean energy per year can therefore be provided to Bocas Del Toro’s most upscale resorts. The solar panels are fitted on the roofs of the service buildings, providing 22% of the resort’s current power needs. Furthermore, a solar power system and a sanitary sewer were installed in a school, reflecting the commitment to curb CO2 emissions while protecting the environment.

INITIAL SITUATION

Conscious travellers often prefer to visit a destination that is sustainable and showcases its environmental commitment as compared to more commercialised destinations. The red frog beach sustainability plan commits to preserving 80% of the island's property for a lifetime, providing over 20% of its needed power through solar energy. Various conservation projects have been implemented, supporting the reforestation of cattle lands, and improving the lives of people living on the island.

SOLUTION

Red Frog Beach Island Resort installed and operates a 193 kw centralized solar power system in Bocas del Toro, Panama. This system provides over 332,000 kWh per year of sustainable, clean energy to Bocas Del Toro’s most upscale resort. Installed on the roofs of service buildings, these solar panels provide over 22 % of the resort’s current power needs and will be expanded as demand increases.

INNOVATION

The installation of a 193 kW centralised solar power system makes the resort special since it has one of the largest island resort's solar power plants in the world. Community members were engaged in the reforestation of a large part of the island that had been damaged due to cattle grazing. The red frog beach island resort & spa was certified for complying with an extensive list of more than 340 criteria in the categories of sustainable management, social and economic elements, cultural heritage and environmental practices.
