Ridder NoNa+ Selective Sodium Removal

The Ridder NoNa+ is a solution that aims at selectively removing Sodium from irrigation water. Applying the Ridder NoNa+ in the irrigation system makes it possible to recirculate the irrigation water for a complete growing season.

INITIAL SITUATION

Sodium is harmful for plant growth and limits re-use of irrigation water. Over the years, irrigation water has been discharged because of harmful sodium levels. With that discharge, water was scarce and fertilizer disappeared, not mentioning the cost and effort of getting new water into the circulation and the negative effect on greenhouse space needed.

SOLUTION

Efficient use of fresh water is important for local production of fresh vegetables. With the Ridder NoNa+ in combination with high-tech greenhouses or indoor farms, the local production of fresh vegetables increases to 20 times in volume with the same water consumption. Applying the Ridder NoNa+ in the irrigation system makes it possible to 100% recirculate the irrigation water for a complete growing season.

INNOVATION

The average unit costs about USD 20,000 per hectare greenhouses. It saves about 950 m3 fresh water per year per hectare. The main competition is older technology such as reversed osmosis. This technology requires a lot of energy to extract the sodium out of the irrigation water and also takes out useful and costly fertilizers in the same process. The selective membrane technology is superior on all aspects.
