National ENERGY GLOBE Award Kenya 2018
TRINE is an innovative ‘fintech’ company closing the gap between private capitals in developed countries and solar companies in emerging markets, offering an alternative finance solution to off-grid solar projects through a novel crowdfunding model. By using the potential of digitalization, they channel finance from private individuals to solar energy companies in emerging markets.
Rural households in the western regions of Kenya do not have access to the national electricity grid thereby, affecting the daily conditions of people living in these areas. Due to widespread poverty and high installation costs of electricity, both renewable and fossil technologies, the majority of the people living around Kitale area do not have access to electricity. Thus, they are dependent on fossil fuel and wood fuel energy, both of which causes pollution and health problems.
TRINE platform is built to allow individuals to engage with energy access projects and their beneficiaries so as to establish a “tight linkage” between the two. Investors can see in real-time from the moment they consider an investment, the impact of the investment. TRINE identifies, assesses, and finances compelling off-grid solar investment opportunities with strong social, economic, and environmental impact. It leverages on several revenue streams to provide concessional debt to solar project developers.
TRINE is aiming to take their communication and impact reporting to the next level by having more resources dedicated to software development and people on the ground, collecting more data from their solar partners to showing real- time information. Nearly all the funds tracked went to boost grid electricity supplies, with less than one percent going into off-grid options like solar home systems.
