National ENERGY GLOBE Award Jordan 2018

Biodivesity Conservation through sustainable Toilets

This project is about conserving bio-diversity of the World Heritage sites in Jordan namely Petra Archeological Park, Dibbeen Forest Reserve and Wadi Rum Reserve using sustainable toilets or ECOLOO. It’s a stand-alone waterless, toilet technology that does not require water for flushing or septic tank for sewage or sewage disposal via suction or sewage piping. In Petra, the project has increased its number of installation from four ECOLOO units in places that lacked such facilities.

Initial situation
Prior to the installation of the ECOLOO sustainable toilets, the management of UNESCO World Heritage Site in Petra, Jordan received a yellow card from UNESCO for its non-sustainable human and animal waste disposal. Tourists had no place to release except for open defecation and this polluted the surrounding so badly until the most visited areas became unbearably stinky and smelly.

The first shipment of 10 toilets were distributed among the three sites namely Petra Archeological Park, Dibbeen Forest Reserve and Wadi Rum Reserve ECOLOO’s objective is to offer tourists decent toilets in Petra especially on the main trail extending from the Siq to the Treasury. All the toilets are up and running without any problems related to odour, clogging or vandalism and are maintained by the same local team that was trained by us the year before.

ECOLOO's Toilet Solution is odourless, waterless, sewage free, energy free & maintenance free. The toilet is technology that can save water and energy and create better, healthier and greener environment for its citizens. It employs bacterial culture to treat the waste and create organic fertilizer that is pathogen free yet rich with nutrition. ECOLOO can also be installed at the rest areas, schools, mosques, or construction sites with almost zero and hassle free maintenance.
