With more than 178 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The Eco Hotel utilizes wooden frameworks as well as expertly recycled materials in the construction of the building. The placement of the hotel is in an ideal location for sun exposure and away from traffic means the hotel does not sacrifice hospitality for environmental responsibility. Part of the roof has been set aside for energy generation with the installation of 10 photovoltaic panels and a thermal energy plant making the hotel virtually independent of any external source of power or fossil fuel burning generators.
The existing conception of how to run a business has become so routine that changing over to renewable sources of energy and building materials a daunting and costly enterprise. The availability of power through the local network is too easy to access and provides very little reward for localized power generation. The public conception of a hotel built by renewable means is one which sacrifices client comforts for environmental friendliness.
This hotel has shattered any preconceptions of what it is to build a zero-energy business. It is located in a sun rich locale in Nago along the Garda river and neighboring olive tree plantation. Because of the location the area is ideally located to provide guests with beautiful scenery to enjoy and the rooftop has also been built to house a whirlpool bath and sitting area. The independent power generator is capable of providing the hotel with all its power needs.
The use of X-LAM is ideal for this structure as it allows the structure to be built with environmental responsibility in mind along with seismic and fire safety regulations being satisfied. The use of a thermal envelop from the basement to the roof allows for total reliability on the buildings ability to heat regulate thus allowing the building to be heat efficient.
