Eco Wave Power is the first commercial wave energy array in Europe that is selling electricity to the electrical grid. The system works by drawing energy via specially designed floaters which move up and down with the movement of the waves to create pressure which in turn drives a hydro motor and a generator mechanism. The first stage of this project consists of a 100KW grid connected power plant.
Many countries did not standardize their wave energy tariffs as well as other governmental payment instruments therefore; they faced the challenges and barriers of commercialization of wave energy through the tariff for wave energy. The other stumbling block to the success of wave energy technology is that many officials want to see the wave energy technology operating in their own coun-try's waters and climate.
This company is the first in the world to sell wave energy to the electrical grid of Gibraltar. The solution is to use specially designed floating mechanism to produce wave energy that turns the electric motor to produce energy. These floaters can be attached to many types of structure and they also contain sensors that continuously monitor the performance of the onboard system.
In this project, the company uses innovative, patented design features in order to produce low cost and reliable wave energy with a smart system which identifies incoming storms. In addition, the company offers a disruptive approach to the wave energy market therefore, instead of using expensive machinery offshore they install floaters in the on-shore and near-shore zones.
