Energy Globe Award

With more than 178 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

National ENERGY GLOBE Award France 2017

Submitted by: SABELLA SAS
Sabella D10 tidal project

SABELLA is an innovative marine current turbine developer, supplying reliable turnkey energy solutions worldwide. It installed a 1 MW full-scale prototype in the Fromveur strait, providing clean energy.

Initial situation
Ushant is a non-integrated area, which means that the grid in Ushant is not connected to the national grid on the mainland. In fact, there is a 20 km distance from Ushant to the closest grid-connection point on the mainland. A four diesel generator thermal plant, two pairs of 1.2 MW and 1.4 MW gensets, supply electricity to the 900 islanders. The generators consume more than 2,000,000 l of fuel per year, brought by boat once every three days. Due to the increase in the fossil fuel price and transport costs, electricity production in Ushant is particularly expensive, in addition of being non-environmentally friendly.

SABELLA is an innovative marine current turbine developer, supplying reliable turnkey energy solutions worldwide. The 1 MW full-scale prototype Sabella D10 was successfully installed in 2015 in the Fromveur strait and grid-connected to Ushant island. Typically, Ushant was entirely powered by a thermal plant, a costly and polluting source of electricity. Tidal power is a green and cost-competitive alternative to fuel-based energy solutions. Besides, tidal resource is an unlimited, predictable and continuous source of energy. During the one-year demonstration, over 70 MWh were fed to the grid. Thus, the D10 turbine supplied up to 15% of Ushant's energy needs, reducing the carbon emission of the island by the same amount and saving more than 20,000 l of fuel. Besides, the implementation of a second energy production source such as Sabella D10 increases the power supply reliability, a major concern for islands.

Even if the tidal industry is still at an early stage of development, tidal turbines are already a cost-competitive alternative to the thermal plant. The Fromveur Strait is classified as natural protected area. All the mandatory permits were obtained for the D10 project, and the one-year sea trials confirmed that the tidal turbine does not entail any negative impact on the marine fauna and flora. SABELLA differentiates itself from its main competitors and leads innovation thanks to both its technological choices and its business philosophy. Since the beginning, SABELLAs technology is based on three cornerstones: simplicity, reliability and ruggedness.
