National ENERGY GLOBE Award Cyprus 2019

Submitted by: Cyprus Telecommunication Authority - CYTA
Verification of Cyta as the first and only“Zero Waste to Landfill” Organisation in Cyprus

Since 2016, Cyta is the first and only “Zero Waste to Landfill” organization in Cyprus. The commitment to the long-term pledge on environmental issues has been proved practically for another year by Cyta, as an organization that sends zero waste to landfills. Cyta secured the certificate ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ from the company TUV Cyprus Ltd. This certification is issued when an organization recycles more than 95% of its waste. In 2017, Cyta, through its unwavering environment-friendly policy, managed to reuse or recycle 97% of its waste.

Initial situation
Waste is one of the greatest problems that Cyprus has to deal with because landfill sites have been saturated, while strict rules from the EU on waste reduction force the country to take immediate actions. For Cyta, environmental policy is part of its broader Corporate Social Responsibility, which embraces all sectors of society in responsibility towards customers, staff, partners and suppliers, the wider society and the state.

The solution includes compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, reduction of resource consumption, re-use, wherever possible, products and equipment and eliminating reckless disposal of them, promoting the recycling of its waste, further reduction in consumption of resources and their rational re-usage, promoting recyclable and environmentally friendly products, addition of environmental issues in the staff’s training programs

Cyta is the first Cypriot organization that has secured the certification of environmental quality ‘Green Office’ for all its shops, with regard to the quality of their environmental administration and operation. ‘Green Office’ is the pioneering pilot program of environmental quality for buildings and offices that is administered by the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association CYMEPA.
