With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. H2E has installed seven fully operational biogas units at pork farms in Ivory Coast using a fixed-dome anaerobic digester biogas technology with an inlet and outlet system. Today, these installed biogas units treat waste generated by 800 pigs to produce biogas for cooking.
After the civil war in Ivory Coast, there was a significant increase in livestock production, particularly pork. Indeed, the sustained production and storage of waste on pork farms created ground for increased methane emissions into the atmosphere and constitute a source of contamination of the environment including water bodies (lagoons and rivers) which are inevitably often very close to the farms.
The solution is to treat anaerobic digestion and converted it into biogas and effluent fertilizer. The excrement of the pigs mixed with recycled cleaning water and flows directly into an underground reactor where anaerobic digestion starts by methanogenic microbes which transform the liquid mix of water- excrement into biogas and a liquid effluent.
The waste treatment system, specifically anaerobic digestion of animal waste, is a new technology in Ivory Coast. The waste can be valorized into cooking gas for kitchens and used for lighting, with minimal additional labor. Another important innovative element is that the entire installation of the biogas system with an inlet and outlet system and fixed dome is constructed manually by local masons using local materials and can last for more than 15 years.
