With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

Alto Maipo Hydroelectric Project (PHAM) is a Greenfield electricity generation project developed by Alto Maipo SpA. It consists of two of the biggest runoff the river hydroelectric power stations in Chile, “Alfalfal II” (264 MW) and “Las Lajas“(267 MW), each one composed by two generating units that contribute 1350 GWh of power which is equivalent to half of the power consumed by Santiago de Chile.
In the first half of 2007, Alto Maipo Hydroelectric Project (PHAM) was entered into the Chilean Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA). An opposition was generated comprising environmentalists, owners of lands, and local tourist entrepreneurs as well as those with broad social networks in the political arena regarding the project and its sole purpose for the nation of Chile.
Alto Maipo is a run-on-the-river hydroelectric project, whose great characteristic is the difference of height between the intakes and the Power Houses, which allows a high efficiency in the quantity of energy produced by the unit of water of turbine. The total project has an installed capacity of 531 MW, which includes two Power Plants: Alfalfal II, with a capacity of 264 MW, a maximum design flow of 27 m3 / sec and a drop height of 1,150m; and Las Lajas with 267 MW, 75 m3 / s and a 486 drop.
The company’s social agreement commitment includes the implementation of a Competitive Fund for organizations within the surrounding communities, along with the awarding of scholarships for students of higher an estimated funding of two hundred thirty thousand USD per year. Alto Maipo SpA is also creating massive employment, with a commitment on the part of the project to hire at least 15% of its work force with workers from within the surrounding communities thereby improving livelihoods.
