Energy Globe Award

With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Aquapolo - Reuse water application in chemical and petrochemical industries of São Paulo Metropolitan Region

Aquapolo Ambiental aims to supply water demand of Capuava Petrochemical Complex from treated sewage from the ABC Sewage Treatment Station in São Paulo Metropolitan Region. The permanence of Capuava Petrochemical Complex could be threatened, because water is one of main elements for its processes used to towers’ cooling and steam generation. Therefore, with the startup of the Aquapolo operation in 2012 it has been possible to increase water availability and guarantee the continuous water supply.

Initial situation
ABC region, where Capuava Petrochemical Complex is located, belongs to the Alto Tietê watershed and is ranked as second in the world in regard to precarious water resources for mankind consumption, where the largest water reservoir is Billings dam. In 2014 and 2015, there was a severe drought within the regions, located mainly in the headwaters of rivers that feed the Cantareira System, influencing on production fall of approximately 30% of the water withdrawal of the springs of Great São Paulo.

The overall motivation to start Aquapolo project was implement to the supply water for the Capuava Petrochemical Complex, by providing water for industrial use from the sewage treated in the WWTP ABC Region of São Paulo - Brazil, with quality and quantity suitable for use mainly in cooling towers and power generation through boiler feed.

The project is innovative due to its capacity to produce reusable water from sewage for industrial purposes in large quantities. 650 L / s is unprecedented in Latin America. Due to the selection of submersible ultrafiltration membrane and reverse osmosis membrane technology and disinfection by chlorine dioxide, it was possible to implement a compact treatment plant with automatic operation in all its units and also with smaller waste generation when compared to the technology of conventional sewage treatment.
