With more than 182 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

iLumen developed the PIDbox, a device that regenerates solar panels affected by efficiency losses due to Potential Induced Degradation (PID). The installation of the PIDbox improves the optimal performance of solar panels during their entire lifetime. The technology works independently of the inverter and there are no threats to the solar system.
Due to Potential Induced Degradation (PID), solar panels degrade faster resulting in their failure to achieve the expected return during their lifetime. Solar systems installed in 2008 systems were very sensitive to PID; therefore, it became impossible to ground the cable that runs for the solar panels to the inverter (negative pole).
As a solution, the PIDbox is connected to the photovoltaic system’s power outlet, right between the panels and the inverter. At night, when the solar cells are not active, the PIDbox reverses the direction of the current and rejuvenates the degenerated cells. Besides increasing the yield of solar panels, the PIDbox also extends their lifetime.
The PIDbox is switched to the power outlet between the solar panels and the inverter which transforms direct current to alternating current and supplies it to the power grid. At night, when the solar panels no longer generate electricity, the PIDbox reverses the current direction and the degenerated solar panels are rejuvenated. The pn-junction that is, the core of the semiconductor technology is strengthened at night by pushing a current through it.
