Pollinating clean energy across India

Pollinate Energy is a social business that aims to solve the intertwined problems of energy poverty and climate change. It does this by giving India’s city slum dwellers access to life-changing sustainable energy products, like solar lights. Its business model works to provide the missing link between India’s urban poor - who are still reliant on kerosene for lighting - and our modern technology advances. Pollinate Energy seeks to remain technology agnostic, and sources a number of sustainable energy products to determine which ones best suit communities’ needs. Then, the company combines a network of micro-entrepreneurs with this technology to best serve urban poor communities. The company recruits and trains local entrepreneurs (‘Pollinators’) to provide door-to-door service in the urban slums, selling and servicing basic energy products. These products significantly enhance the health, wellbeing, lifespan and earning potential of India’s urban poor. They reduce indoor air pollution, preventing thousands of childhood mortalities, and mitigate climate change by replacing kerosene - which is a leading emitter of black carbon - with solar. Pollinate Energy also works to raise awareness about energy poverty through regular volunteer programs – over 100 Indian and international students and young professionals come and work with the enterprise each year to understand how social businesses can affect social and environmental change. Since Pollinate Energy was founded in November 2012, it has sold 11,098 solar lights, impacting the lives of 51,050 people. This has saved 967,391 liters of kerosene, and 2.32 million kg of CO2 emissions from being released into the air. The enterprise operates in three cities - Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Pollinate Energy aspires to be in 20 cities within the next four years, with an estimated market size of 20 million people.
