Project: Knowledge for Life - The power of stories

Illustrating the power of stories as a tool that addresses the problem of taking risks and that is projected toward a culture of prevention, privileging the knowledge and lessons learned from families through the illustration of their smallest members.

Initial situation
The urban and rural communities of Ombúes de Lacalle and Chonchillas in the department of Colonia have been hit by severe meteorological phenomena, some of them very recent and of great intensity, such as heavy rains and strong winds with very strong gusts of more than 100 km/h that have caused damages in housing, electric mains, blasting of ceilings and infrastructures, overturning of urban transport of passengers among others. The last decade marked the communities by economic disaster and losses of feed for the dairy cattle that caused sustaining problems of the dairy production.

Solution
From the risk profiles made with the communities Friends of the Wind Society saw the need to work with children in prevention in the face of threats. Their objective is to reduce the risks of disasters through the knowledge of the threats and to spread the prevention tools. Social monitoring is also promoted in the monitoring of risk management policies. The children contribute with their stories to the workshop, told by their families, and through these stories, the passages of meaning are recreated through plastics.

Innovation
An initiative developed within the framework of the regional project ‘More education, less risk: strengthening disaster risk reduction and resilience through education’, which is part of the DIPECHO in South America, with the main objective of building a culture of resilience and security through education for disaster risk reduction and the promotion of protective and safe educational environments.

Jury-Rating
Children are learning far easier from stories than from hard facts, which could ensure the correct behavior in case of an emergency. The identification with the protagonists reduces their fear and helps them to think straight in critical situations. At the same time telling your personal story can help to digest bad experiences. This is a great project for the children and for their families.
