National ENERGY GLOBE Award Taiwan 2017
Recycled PET bottles are used to manufacture eco-textile products, creating a new life cycle for these bottles while reducing the consumption of resources. The whole profit is donated to a foundation helping disaster survivors.
Taiwan's textile industry creates 15 to 20 tons of fabric leftovers each year. Taking eco-fleece fabric as an example, 10% of the fabric becomes waste throughout the production process. These leftovers are usually burned or taken away by the waste management company for further treatment. During the production of 32 tons of disaster relief blankets, 3.2 tons remain as leftovers. This was a great concern to DA.AI, since they want to keep their impact on the environment as low as possible.
Established in December 2008, DA.AI is Taiwan's first non-profit brand dedicated to the production of eco-friendly products. 100% of its net profit is proceeded to the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation to help the underprivileged and disaster survivors. Recycled PET bottles are used to manufacture eco-textile products, creating a new life cycle for these bottles while reducing the consumption of resources. By developing a Cradle to Cradle (C2C) design model, DA.AI recycles and turns back disposed fabric into its PET chip form. The result are the series Recycle to Recycle (R2R) PET chip and the R2R PET eco-fabric. These include glass frames, mouth covers, blankets, scarfs, vests and their zipper. DA.AI therefore turned from a Taiwanese waste reduction green brand into a zero waste global green role model.
The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation started its grass-root environmental mission in 1990 with only one volunteer and one recycling spot in Taiwan, and grew to over 200,000 volunteers and 86,000 environmental points 26 years later. The very first R2R product was the DA.AI signature eco-blanket, which is not only a supply that can be distributed in humanitarian disasters as a relief for survivors, but also a symbol of love and hope for both our planet and its residents. DA.AI's eco-blanket was distributed in over 34 countries worldwide and comforted over 875,000 survivors. With the new R2R eco-blanket, humanitarian aid activities and environmental protection are combined in a unique way.
