National ENERGY GLOBE Award Switzerland 2017

Submitted by: Stiftung myclimate - The Climate Protection Partnership
Project: Energy and climate pioneers

The program energy and climate pioneers which was initiated in 2010 has since then been inspiring and sensitizing over 17,500 pupils for the climate change and a sustainable use of energy and resources.

Initial situation
The climate has been changing a lot during the last 150 years due to the increased energy demand, the massive consumption of fossil fuels and the high emissions of greenhouse gases. Consequences of the climate change which can already be felt will even become worse in the future and also affect the economy. The climate change and the question of sustainable energy supply are huge societal challenges and have to be solved both on a political and on an individual level. Since the implementation of political measures for climate change mitigation is proceeding quite slowly, a fundamental rethink and personal initiative of each and everyone is crucial.

Solution
The program energy and climate pioneers which was initiated in 2010 has since then been inspiring and sensitizing over 17,500 pupils for the climate change and a sustainable use of energy and resources. Different hands-on lectures for each age from kindergarten to high school are used to reach children and teenagers and to introduce this topic to them. After the lectures the classes develop and implement their own climate protection projects which support a sustainable use of energy and reduce the burden on the climate. The participating students see that they themselves can become active and contribute to a climate-friendly future. Up to now, more than 750 exciting climate protection projects have been realized. Their effect becomes intensified through the inclusion of other classes, parents, relatives and authorities.

Innovation
Related to its high technical standards, the per capita energy consumption of Switzerland is 6000 W instead of a sustainable energy goal of 2000 W. A study of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology states that it is possible to reach this goal through efficiency enhancement measures and a conscious use of energy. This program offers an approach how to reach all age groups by showing them measures which are easy to implement. By combining theory and practice, an intensified sensitization with a long-term effect is reached.

We are an enthusiastic supporter of the Energy Globe Awards and its aim to strengthen society’s awareness of the necessity for ecological change, by honouring outstanding best practice projects in environmental sustainability from all parts of the world. ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is the official Trade Promotion Organisation (TPO) of the Republic of Austria and as a country we are proud of our success in green technologies. Our support of the Energy Globe Awards continues this tradition.

Jury-Rating
The climate change and the question of sustainable energy supply are huge societal challenges and have to be solved both on a political and on an individual level.
