With more than 178 participating countries and over 2000 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today's most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources. Award ceremonies are held all over the world. Prominent personalities as well as Energy Globe Ambassadors in 90 countries support the mission of Energy Globe. The activities of Energy Globe attract worldwide media attention - international TV stations report each year with approximately 1,000 hours of broadcasting time. The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.

A new vacuum waste collection system revolutionizes the storage and transport of waste from bins to pipes. It is a closed pipe system that transports household waste from inlets in the streets to waste collection stations.
The way household waste was stored and transported in the Norwegian city of Bergen had been the same since the start of organized waste collection several generations ago. Once or twice a week garbage trucks collected waste from waste bins that were standing in the streets in the city center. In other words: waste collection had seen very little innovation or reform. Most of the waste was ending up without recycling in the residual waste.
BIR is a waste collection company responsible for collecting waste from nine different municipalities in the proximity of Bergen. The city of Bergen with the help of BIR Nett AS is the first in the world to build an underground pipe system to collect waste from an entire city center. The city center covers several km2, more than 12,000 households and a network of pipes that exceeds 7,5 kilometers after construction is completed. BIR’s customers in the city center are now finally able to recycle paper, beverage carton, plastic wrapping as well as glass and metal packaging close to their homes, thereby directly contributing to the goal of making Bergen “Norway’s greenest city”. As of December 2016, 3,700 customers have been connected to 102 inlets for residual waste and 71 inlets for paper, beverage carton and plastic. They have opened the inlets about 350,000 times since 26th of October 2015, an average of 858 openings each day. Since the opening of the vacuum waste collection system about 190 tons of paper, beverage carton and plastic have ended up in the paper container at the waste collection station.
The new vacuum waste collection system (Bossnett) revolutionizes the storage and transport of waste from bins to pipes. It is a closed pipe system that uses airflow to transport household waste from inlets in the streets to containers placed at waste collection stations. With the new system in place, BIR Nett helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (fewer garbage trucks in the city center), to reduce fire hazard in the narrow streets of Bergen and also to reduce littering and the resulting proliferation of rats and other vermin.
