National ENERGY GLOBE Award Niger 2017
This program is designed to allow farmers to remotely monitor their crops irrigation levels. This allows the user to make changes based on the weather and the same on travel cost (such as petrol consumption in trucks) by not needing to travel to the farm to make manual changes.
The use of irrigation systems has the potential to double vegetable crops compared to weather dependent farming types. The country’s farming population has difficulty accessing more modern irrigation systems due to the high cost and the low literacy level.
Provide energy efficient systems to power the irrigation system so that farmers can access low cost irrigation which does not adversely affect their fragile climate.
The systems utilize solar energy to power the pumps which also assists the country with their international commitments to reducing carbon emissions. This is particularly true of Niger as their locale bares a significant fragility brought on by the threat of climate change.
