National ENERGY GLOBE Award 2015
More than 6 million tons of plastic waste end up in the sea. 8 tons of plastic are produced per second worldwide and per year, 600 billions of plastic bags are fabricated. Plastic rots very slowly and releases its hazardous substances into the environment which poisons seas and animals. Since George Zacharia cares a lot about these issues and the environment in general, he launched the organization “Students for the Earth” in his school and motivated other students to participate in many environmental activities. They took part in a plastic bottle collection, during which they were able to collect 650 kg of plastic bottles within 4 weeks. 167.2 kg of electronic waste were collected during the E-Waste collection drive. In 2012, a big event in Sharjah Mega Mall was celebrated in remembrance of the Earth Hour day, to remind people of the importance of protecting the environment and saving resources and energy. On the World Environment Day on 5th of June, the entire staff of the English School for Boys in Sharjah uses the school bus instead of their personal cars in order to save fuel and energy. The school also takes part in can collection initiatives in cooperation with other environmental groups. 34 students participated also in the “Clean Up UAE campaign” in al Hamriya, during which they collected a variety of non-biodegradable wastes ranging from plastic bottles to plastic wrappers, cans and plastic bags. To keep records of their manifold activities, they launched the environmental youth magazine “Eco Youth” on the World Environment Day in 2013 which consists of articles and entries from students all over the world. The Facebook group “Voice Out Eco Club” has over 800 members now and their facebook page has more than 1,400 likes.
You do not have to be great to start but you have to start to be great!
