Title: The Backyard Nursery Project
In northern Armenia, extreme poverty necessitates an unsustainable reliance on nearby forests. Armenia Tree Project is mitigating poverty-driven environmental destruction by creating supply chains of micro-nurseries that feed Armenia’s reforestation needs. These nurseries are owned by Armenia’s poorest families, who have doubled their annual income by participating in the Backyard Nursery Project. This additional income is invested locally and is being used to reduce reliance on the forests for heating and cooking fuel by creating an economy for investing in a natural gas infrastructure. This project reduces deforestation by creating ownership of micro-businesses that are funding future sustainable energy sources.
