Title: Renewable energy for fishers at Lake Victoria
On Lake Victoria night fishing is widespread. For this purpose the fishers use kerosene lamps to lure sardines into their nets. However, kerosene not only damages the health of the environment, humans and animals, it also creates a financial squeeze on the fishers, who must pay up to 50% of their income for it. The goal of a project launched in 2004 by the Global Nature Fund and the Kenyan organization Osienala was to employ solar-operated lamps to reduce the high kerosene consumption and thus to improve the income situation of the fishers and simultaneously to reduce the pollution of the largest African lake.
