Title: Guidelines for ecological housing subsidies
The Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides for a limitation of greenhouse gas emissions in the period 2008 to 2012 in comparison to 1990. For Austria a reduction goal 13% was defined. Based on this and with the vision of setting a benchmark Austria-wide, Styria established its Guidelines for Ecological Housing Subsidies, which took effect 1 June 2006. The difficulty of this project was to balance high quality requirements against social compatibility. Project goals included a massive CO2 reduction, autonomy from fossil fuels, and the promotion of solar energy, as well as the recycling of wastes from the demolition of old buildings and the assurance of the affordability of living in the new housing. Furthermore, great emphasis was placed on the environmentally friendly choice of building materials.
