Title: Virtual water efficiency as an innovative approach to resource-conserving planting strategies in agriculture
Virtual water efficiency was developed in a pilot project. Virtual water is water embedded in products. The virtual water input was computed and compared regionally and nationally, which was made possible by the introduction of a reference called the virtual water efficiency. The same product in different countries and regions requires different amounts of water, which can be compared via the virtual water efficiency. This efficiency approach was applied to a model that helped to simulate and develop an optimal planting strategy with respect to consumption of the resources water and land at the regional, national, continental and global level.
