Title: The Living City - A Vision for Toronto

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has developed the concept of The Living City as a vision and approach for making Toronto, Canada, one of the most sustainable, livable, city regions in the world. The programs of The Living City are built upon a foundation of integrated science and best practices, sector engagement and enablement. A cornerstone of the program is the principle that no single agency or organization has the authority or ability to create sustainable communities and as such, collaboration with traditional and non-traditional partners is essential for success. TRCA administers the program within its jurisdiction and uses local watershed planning processes, such as a recent planning study for the Rouge River Watershed, as a means of integrating diverse interests and defining and achieving sustainability. The program was adopted in 2006 and is a long-term commitment; however, many components are already well underway.
