Title: Risk analysis and monitoring protect groundwater in Washington state
The city of Vancouver (Washington, USA) has developed an innovative and cost-effective program to protect the community’s groundwater, local streams and lakes. It was initiated with a city ordinance that was written by a team of regulators, industry leaders and environmental groups. Businesses and industries are risk-evaluated based on the materials stored at their sites. More than 200 operations have been visited by a city inspector. A database stores facility information and a GIS application allows the community to track program progress. The program, which was recognized with the 2003 Washington State Environmental Excellence award, has been a model for other communities.
