Title: Automobile-Free Model Community and Carsharing
In 1998-1999 an automobile-free model community was constructed in Vienna (Austria) with 244 residential units in nine blocks. The residents are not allowed to have a car, but they can use a carsharing vehicle at any time. This carsharing system is equipped with modern on-board computer technology, and the cars can be booked via internet or telephone. Due to this system, due to parking space legislation, only 25 of the 250 carports had to be built. The remaining funds were used for a sustainable and ecological design and for the extension of social facilities. In the automobile-free community on average 4 cars are used simultaneously. This saves 250 tons of CO2 and €500,000 annually.
