Title: Watergy as Synergy from Water Treatment to Food Production
Watergy is a new technique for water purification, air-conditioning and food production and an enabling technology to meet basic needs in energy, water and nutrition. The technical rationale was tested on two prototypes within the framework of an EU research project (NNE5-2001-683, March 2003 to March 2006). The interdisciplinary team consists of scientists from different areas such as building services engineering, architecture, agricultural architecture, horticulture, physics and control technology. The project is coordinated by the University of Technology in Berlin. In 2004, the first prototype regarding greenhouse horticulture was set up in Almeria, Spain. The metrological logging started in the summer of 2004. The second prototype is a residential and office building with projecting greenhouses along its facades. Another application area arises in basic research on advanced life support, which targets the supply to extreme locations such as deserts, the Arctic or outer space.
