Title: Empowerment of rural women through sustainable income generation in India
Rural women of the village Thogur, India, who live below the poverty index were motivated and supported by a local NGO to form 11 self-help groups (SHGs) comprising 200 women. These groups took a bold initiative to set up a brick production enterprise by adopting an energy-efficient and environment-friendly VSBK (vertical shaft brick kiln). Science Technology Entrepreneurship Development coordinated loan disbursement from bank and government subsidies, while Energy and Resources Institute provided the groups with technical and managerial support such as construction, operation and training. The entire initiative has helped the women to own a rural business enterprise that enables sustainable income generation, local employment and empowerment.
