Title: SunCities Solar Village in UK
Kirklees Metropolitan Council has been involved in the European Commission project SunCities since 2000. The project was completed in February 2006 and has resulted in a total of 351 kWp solar photovoltaic systems and 63 solar thermal systems being installed on 240 council-owned homes, two 40-bed residential care homes, two 8-bed care homes and luxury apartments at Titanic Mill. Through SunCities, Kirklees will have installed 4.9% of the total solar electricity installed in the UK, making SunCities the largest domestic solar project in the UK. The project has attracted funding of up to 1.5 Mio £ to the Kirklees district. More than 500 households have been involved, including elderly tenants and families with young children. They will benefit from free solar electricity and can expect to save up to 50 £ a year on their electricity bill.
