Title: Energy and Heat from Sewage Sludge

The main objective of the project was to utilize sewage sludge in existing coal-fired power plants. The substitution of sewage sludge for coal at the district heating plant in Mellach (Austria) leads to more energy efficiency and contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The additional use of the waste material that occurs during combustion (solid and fly ash) in the cement and building industry spares the input of expensive resources and leads to an optimized resource cycle. Since autumn 2005 it is possible through this project to feed approximately 1/3 of the Styrian sewage sludge into the energy production of the Mellach plant. An essential condition is equipping the power plant with a flue gas cleaning facility.
