Title: Rural Energy Education Project in Sundarban Delta, India
The project was launched in 1994 with educational emphasis on needy rural needy students on the Delta Islands, which are regarded as one of the most adverse parts of the world. The population is dispersed on a huge archipelago, where no road infrastructure, electricity, telecommunications or nearby schools can be found. The academic drop-out rate among the students is about 80%. In this precarious situation, it is difficult to introduce environmental, energy and health aspects to these students. The project brings poor people together with politicians and professionals in order to get the students integrated in environmental and educational projects dealing with rural energy, bio-diversity and livelihood development.
