Title: Whey Biogas Facility Generates Electricity and Heat in Upper Austria
Whey and similar substances, byproducts of the cream cheese production, can be used in energy production. The gas produced in a whey biogas facility is injected into a heating/power station and the produced eco-power can be counted in the Kyoto tally. Furthermore the accruing heat is 100% reused in the production process. The Landfrisch whey biogas facility generates 500 kWh of electricity and approximately 580 kWh of thermal energy. In comparison, an average Upper Austrian household consumes 3000 kWh/a of electricity and 15,000 kWh/a of thermal energy. The biogas facility also reduces the annual CO2 emissions by 2000 tons.
