Title: Sustainable Superstructure over Rail Yard
The Westbahnhof Sustainable Urban Implantation Project was a five-year program commissioned by the Vienna (Austria) Department of Urban Development and the Austrian National Bank to design a new city district as a superstructure over the West Railway Station yard. The project was carried out according to the theory of the sustainable city as developed by the Center for Sustainable Cites and Oikodrom and later incorporated into the European Charter of Towns and Cities towards Sustainability. Three design studies proposed a new urban form inspired by medieval European town on a hill; but instead of a city on a hill, the studies developed a city as a hill – a single structure spanning the rail yard.
