Title: Solar-Heated Prefabricated Houses for Earthquake Victims in Azad Kashmir and NWFP

The severe earthquake of Oct. 8, 2005 left thousands of dead and many more injured. More than 80% of the houses and buildings were completely destroyed and the remaining were too unsafe to live in. Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) in collaboration with the KASB Bank provided 50 earthquake-proof solar-heated prefabricated houses. The people are now living in these houses and do not need wood fuel to keep them warm, thus preventing deforestation. The women and children do not have to spend hours collecting wood fuel, thus children may go to schools and women can do some income-generating activities.
