Title: Pilot Project for Development and Installation of Two Micro-Hydro-Kaplan Turbines
Pakistan is blessed with 152 million acre feet (MAF) annual flow of water through rivers, streams and canals with a total length of 35,000 miles. Thus Pakistan has more than 5000 MW potential for utilization of hydropower to provide the distributed population (especially in northern areas) with micro and small power plants in the range of less than 10 MW. There is an immediate market of more than 5000 such micro/mini/small hydroplants while about 1000 such plants are in operation in the country. In order to address this issue and to promote hydropower in Pakistan, the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) launched an initiative by installing 2 x 40 kW R&D power plants and training facilities near the University of Engineering and Technology in Taxila.
