Title: Glass/foil combination for greenhouse saves energy and improves transparency

The goal of the project is to reduce the high energy requirements of conventional plain-glass greenhouses through the use of a newly developed glass/foil combination (GFC). The GFC consists of a self-cleaning ETFE foil (outside) and a non-reflective, thermally hardened clear glass pane (inside). Individually and in the large-area GFC, clear glass and ETFE foil have a quantitatively and qualitatively improved transparency compared to conventional greenhouse glass. Installed as a greenhouse roof, the novel combination of glass and foil with an air-filled interface improves thermal insulation. Measurements and simulation computations predict savings of 50% in heating costs, and the improved translucency further benefits optimum plant development. This leads to improved efficiency of the production facility and so promotes the acceptance of this energy saving measure on new construction or energy renovation of existing facilities.
