Title: Installation of sulfuric acid absorption crystallizer for energy conservation in Nagda, India

Sodium sulfate is produced as a by-product in viscose manufacturing. The by-product needs to be concentrated, crystallized and dried for marketing. Crystallization involves cooling the solution to bring it to a saturation level. The steam consumption in boosters of conventional steam crystallizers is high. Staple Fibre Division has designed & developed a sulfuric acid absorption crystallizer that works on the principle of vapor absorption. The vapors generated due to vacuum in crystallizers are now absorbed in sulfuric acid, thereby eliminating the boosters. The net savings in steam is 86,000 TPA along with electrical energy (13,250 TPA of coal equivalent).
