Title: WinTecc (wind-driven technology for freighters) and MS Beluga Skysail

More than 90% of international freight traffic occurs at sea. Ships annually consume 280 million tons of heavy oil and emit more than 800 million tons of CO2. One way of reducing fuel consumption and emissions is to utilize the wind that is available in excess on high seas. The Beluga Group will be the first shipping company worldwide to employ a kite for additional drive. The SkySails system consists of a front-mounted kite held by a telescope mast, adjusted by a line, and controlled automatically. Using wind energy reduces fuel consumption and pollution by nearly one third.
