Title: Integrated approach for decreasing persistent organic pollutants in Macedonia
The Strumica city region in Macedonia is a well established producer of spring-summer vegetables, with more than 50% grown under plastic foils (low-high to ground level greenhouse gardens). These plastic foils have a lifespan of 1-3 years, after which they are burned on location, thereby releasing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) into the air. The project will assist in the collection, selection and purchase of used plastic foil from the farmers to prevent its burning and so the release of POPs. This will create possibilities for a healthier environment, economic benefits, and local self-development.
