Title: Sustainable use and management of flood plain in Hungary

An EU LIFE floodplain rehabilitation project was started in 2004 along the Hungarian reaches of the Tisza River. In addition to the expansion of water retention capacity for flood control, the main objectives were to sustain the natural value and to achieve a good state for the wetland habitats. The project implementation: • solved the water management problems of the floodplain • ensured the quantity of water adequate for the ecological needs • build the water channeling facilities • rehabilitated the floodplain habitat • cleared alien species • developed adequate methods for natural, economical farming and land use • involved farmers and the population in policy formulation
