Title: Construction of first solar thermal plant in West Africa
Antiquated hydro-electric plants and the rising power demand in Ghana are causing bottlenecks in water supply. To reduce its dependence on energy imports, Ghana wishes to commit to renewable energy. Due to a lack of alternatives for hot water production, electric water heaters continue to be used. MP-TEC started a pilot project to demonstrate that in equatorial countries despite their rainy season reliable hot water production is feasible with solar thermal means. In 2005 in the Shangri-La Hotel in Ghana the first solar thermal plant in West Africa was realized to successfully cover all hot water requirements. Since its installation there have been no supply bottlenecks and additional electric heating became superfluous.
